Obituary

Hugh Henry Atkinson, 80, of Lonaconing, Md. passed peacefully on May 25, 2023, surrounded by his wife, daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughter.

Hugh was born on November 30, 1942 in Cumberland, Maryland, the son of Lonaconing parents, the late Hugh "Harry" Henry Atkinson IV, and Mabel Julia Beckman Atkinson Ternent and step-father William "Gordie" G. Ternent.

On July 7, 1962, Hugh married his Bruce High School sweetheart, Sally Darlene Miller in First Baptist Church, in Westernport, Md.

Upon graduation from Valley High School (class of 1960) Hugh joined the United States Air Force to serve his country. His tours of duty took him to San Antonio, Texas for basic training and Wichita Falls for school in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration followed by an eighteen month tour of duty at Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, DC. At Andrews AFB he was proud to have served in a line of honor guards as President John F. Kennedy deplaned Air Force One. An eighteen month tour of duty served in Brindisi, Italy was the highlight of his military career. For the remainder of his life, Hughie loved and respected all things Italian.

At the end of serving his country, Hugh was employed by Potomac Edison, Lonaconing, as a service technician and lineman, followed by a few years of employment at Frostburg State College. He then worked eight years at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory prior to owning Atkinson Electrical Service for 30 years until he retired.

Hugh is survived by his wife of sixty years, Sally and their three daughters, Julia Beth Shillingburg, of Swanton, Md., Linda Sue Brown and husband Randee, of Owings Mills, Md., and Allison Jean Shaffer, of McHenry. Md.; seven grandchildren, James "Jamie" Thomas Shillingburg and wife Jennifer, Blake Allen Shillingburg and fiancé Jenna Sivic, Christopher James Brown, Olivia Grace Shaffer, Jonas Franklin Shaffer, Julia Grace Davis, and Allison Simone Brown; five great grandchildren, Skyler and Mason Shillingburg, Easton and Sawyer Shillingburg and Arielle Brown; and three sisters, Elizabeth Lee Gowans, Julia Annette Metz and husband Kenneth, and M.
