Obituary

Betty Lou McIndoe passed on to eternal life with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation where she had been undergoing rehabilitation with the goal of returning to her West Main Street, Lonaconing home.  Betty had been a rehabilitation patient since February 1, 2022 after transferring from UPMC Western Maryland Hospital having been admitted there through the Emergency Room on Saturday, January 22, 2022 due to an acute health condition.

Betty Lou was born in Westernport, MD on the first day of Spring, March 20, 1930 to her parents, Marguerite (Crable) Robertson and William Robertson, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident at the young age of 24.

Betty Lou was preceded in death by the great love of her life her devoted husband, William R. McIndoe, “Bill” to all who knew him, on July 16, 2003, who had suffered a heart attack at the age of 76.  Bill and Betty Lou were married on November 29, 1957.  Bill and Betty Lou made a great pair and were well known throughout the local area for their dance skills – area dance floors were “cleared” countless times to enjoy the dance pairing.  A testament to their dance skills and highlight for Betty Lou and Bill was their selection to dance the Jitter Bug to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” during Lonaconing’s Bicentennial Program that included “Dance Styles through the Years”.

Also preceding Betty Lou in death was her mother-in-law, Christine Turnbull McIndoe, on February 16, 1991, her Mother, Marguerite, March 28, 1991, and her beloved brother, William E. Robertson, on April 8, 2000.  Betty also mourned the loss of Shirley Rowan Page, her best friend and Central High School graduation classmate, who shared the same first day of Spring birth date who passed on August 8, 2015 and Betty’s little black toy poodle canine companion, Maggie Ann, who filled her house and heart with joy from February 2003 until her passing in March 2016.

Before Betty married Bill and before the birth of their daughter, Lisa Ann, Betty’s first job was with the Lonaconing Silk Mill, followed by working the Jewelry Counter at Rosenbaum’s Department Store in downtown Cumberland in the 1950’s where she earned just pennies on commission for each piece she sold, and Betty sure could wear and sell jewelry!  In 1968, Betty began a 25-year career, her true calling, as a Teacher Assistant in the Allegany County School System first at Barton Elementary, next McCoole Elementary, and lastly her beloved Georges Creek Elementary.  Betty impacted many students with her creative Learning Centers, Bulletin Boards, and her fun, caring ways.  It was very common for her to receive cards from former students and to hear shouts of “Hello Mrs. McIndoe!  We love you!” from her past students as they passed her home and saw her sitting on the porch!  Betty loved her work and all the students she had the privilege to teach.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Lisa Ann McIndoe, and Molly Tierney of Cumberland, MD.  Additionally surviving, are Betty’s sister-in-law, Ardtha Faye McKenzie Robertson, nephews, Dr. Kevin Robertson, John Koby Robertson, nieces Tracey Robertson Duffy all of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and Travis Robertson Schelling, Utah, as well as her cousin, Shirley Beckner Duke, of Florida.  Betty also leaves behind, and will be remembered by her good friends, Steven Nicol and LaVonna Rosenberger, both of Lonaconing, MD.

Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, Lonaconing, MD, is overseeing Mrs. McIndoe’s final wishes. There will be no visitation/viewing.  A private Graveside Service will be conducted by Pastor Thomas Morgan, First  Presbyterian Church, Lonaconing, MD. Interment will be in held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lonaconing next to her husband and mother.
