Anna Bishop

Anna Bishop, 83, of Oakland died January 7, 2022 at Garrett Regional Medical Center, Oakland. Born on November 17, 1938 she was the daughter of the late Alban Bishop and Bessie Jones (Ritchie) Bishop.

She was preceded in death by an uncle, Robert Ritchie, two sisters, Martha Gross and Arra Bishop and two nephews Robert Gross and Michael Gross.

A graduate of Valley High School and Frostburg State College; she received a Master’s degree from Frostburg in 1968 with courses from the University of Maryland, Bowie State College and Western Maryland College for certification in guidance.

She taught math at Francis Scott Key Junior High School in Prince George’s County, English at Fort Hill High School and returned to Francis Scott Key and Benjamin Foulois Junior High School as a guidance counselor. In 1972 she transferred to Garrett County as a guidance counselor at Southern High School until retirement in 1987. She substituted from several years following and was Grant Manager of the Board of Education’s Drug Free Schools Program.

She was a member of many professional organizations: Prince George’s County Math Association, Maryland Math Association, Maryland Personnel & Guidance Association, P.G. County Personnel & Guidance Association, Retired National Board of Certified Counselors and Garrett County and Maryland Retired Teachers Associations.

Other organizations include: Alpha Alpha Chapter and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, where she served as Vice President, President, Chapter & State Research Chairman, Chapter Treasurer and World Fellowship Chair. Also a member of Combating Underaged Drinking Council, Chairman of the Garrett County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Council, Big Brother’s/Big Sister’s Board of Directors.

Previous member of Garrett Branch AAUW-President 1976-1980 and was secretary of the Garrett County Alcoholism Advisory Council from 1983-84 and President from 1984 until its dissolution.

She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Oakland.

She was an avid bowler; having bowled in local leagues and local state and national tournaments. She was Treasurer of the Ladies Monday Skirts League, President of Summer Wednesday Trio League and a member of Thursday Seniors League.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, February 4, 2022 from 11AM-Noon at Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing. A funeral service will follow at Noon with Rev. Thomas Morgan officiating. Interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lonaconing.
