John Leo Winner, 73, Lonaconing, died on

, at Western Maryland Health System
surrounded by his family.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Anne Perry (Chappell) Winner; his son David Winner and wife Beth; his son Chris Winner and wife A l ison; and his daughter Molly Stewart and husband Todd. Very special to John were his six grandch i ldren Justin Winner and wife Stephanie; Kaylyn Tinsley; Shae Winner; Courtney Winner; Colten Winner; and Molly Winner. John is also survived by his siblings Elizabeth Woods and husband Jim; Bernard W i nner and wife Dot; Kay Larkin; Sr. Kathleen Vernard; Rose Montgomery and husban d Bob; Jim Winner and wife Betty Lou; Hank Winner and wife Barbara; and Gerry Winner and wife Phyllis. Many nieces, nephews and close friends mourn his passing.
He was preceded in death by his pa r ents Bernard and Kathleen Winner; his sister Mary Winner; his sister Veronica Beckner and husband Raymond; and his son Theodore James Winner. John was born on March 4 , 1938 in Lonaconing , Maryland , the son of the late Bernard and Kathleen Winner. John was a lifelong reside n t of Lonaconing . He worked as the Lonaconing Town Administrator for 30 plus years. John was a member of the George's Creek Promotions Council, the Lonaconing Fireworks Committee , The Town Christmas Lighting Committee, and var i ous other organizations aimed at the preservation and improvement of the Town of Lonaconing . Lonaconing was a special place to John and he took great pr i de in seeing it maintained and beautified.
Those close to John know that he had a great passion for sports. He spent many, many hours in gymnasiums and on fields across the area watching his own children and as of late, his grandchildren as they participated in various athletics. He rarely missed a game. John, h i mself, was an avid golfer and a member for many years o f the Maplehurst Country Club, Frostburg. He enjoyed a good golf game with his close group of friends and also h is sons and grandsons. John was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM , Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at St . Mary's Catholic Church in Lonaconing with Father Eric Gauchat, celebrant. Burial will be in the St . Mary's Catholic Cemetery and serving as pallbearers will be John's close friends, Richard Grandstaff, George Lauder, David Shook, John Kinnie, Jack Coburn, Bob Lupton and Warren "Whiz" Foote. At the request of the family memorial contributions may be made to Sodality of St. Mary's Church at 16102 St. Mary's Church Terrace, Lonaconing , MD 21539 .
