John Fairgrieve

February 3, 2024 — March 17, 2015

John Ray Fairgrieve, 91, of 40 Main Street, Lonaconing, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at the Frostburg Village Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born February 3, 1924, in Moscow to the late James and Maude (Green) Fairgrieve, he was preceded in death by four brothers (Milton, Lester, Galen and Dwaine “Dick” Fairgrieve), two sisters (Evelyn Shuck and Gladys McCabe), and his ex-wife Leaetta Fairgrieve.

John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1943-1948 participating in World War II on LST-286 which was part of the Normandy Invasion.  He stayed in touch with several shipmates over the years and had good memories of spending time in ports in the Mediterranean and in the Pacific as well as others.  John was a member of the Barton American Legion and the former Lonaconing VFW.

John had several jobs over his lifetime—some of which were working at the Celanese, a coal miner, guard at the Hagerstown Correctional Institute, a merchant marine on a ship in the Great Lakes, a coal truck driver and an over-the-road tractor trailer driver.

John had many talents.  He once built his own house and even erected a motorized ride in the yard for his children.  There wasn’t much he wouldn’t tackle.  Up until the last several years he was the person you called when an extra hand was needed with a project.  He was always willing to help others.   He was a quiet man who loved his family.  He had a love for fishing and watching the Baltimore Orioles.

John is survived by daughters Sandy Martin (Bill) of Corriganville, Bonnie Miller (Glenn) of Lonaconing, Ginger Lanthorn (Laura) of Lusby, Cathy Logue (Gary) of Myrtle Beach and son James Fairgrieve (Cathy) of Barton.  John is also survived by ten grandchildren (Tori, Anthony, Carrie, Jonathan, Chad, Cody, Keith, Amanda, Megan and William), nine great grandchildren (Billy, Brittany, Dillon, Karem, Joey, Ericka, Keith Jr., Payton, and Brayden), and one great great grandson Kayden.  He is also survived by his brother Aubrey “Hogan” Fairgrieve, Lonaconing, and one sister Delores Sterling, Geneseo, Illinois.

John had a saying when someone passed which was “Well, he’s got that over with.”  Just a part of life we all must go through.  May he rest in peace.  He was loved.

Family and friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A. Lonaconing on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 4-6 p.m.  A funeral service will be held immediately following.  Burial will be at the Laurel Hill Cemetery.

The family thanks the Western Maryland Health System, Frostburg Nursing and Rehab Center, the Cumberland VA Clinic and their Home-Based Primary Care Staff, Drs. Shafiei, Sidhu, and Parousis, and Maureen Calabrese from ProCare for their good care.
