Dorothy Mcmahon

February 22, 1930 — March 6, 2016

Dorothy Elizabeth Meyers McMahon was an extraordinary woman of very strong convictions until the final days of her 86 amazing years.  At the young age of just nineteen Dorothy accepted a marriage proposal along with the promise of creating enough children for a ball team.  Loving mother of fourteen children, twenty-six grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren Dorothy passed to eternal life at her home surrounded by her devoted children on Sunday, March 6, 2016.

Born in Rockwood, PA on February 22, 1930 Dorothy was the daughter of the late Anna and Augustus Meyers.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John Patrick McMahon, Sr. and two sons, Phil and Tom.  Dorothy was also preceded in death by two brothers Harold and Gus Meyers and a sister Virginia Mae (Meyers) Cole.

Dorothy was a graduate of Beall High School class of 1948.  Aside from being a Head Start Teachers Aide and working as an Extension Aide for the Allegany County Cooperative Extension Service in the latter years of her working life Dorothy devoted her life to raising her family. She is survived by her children Pat and wife Sue Ann of Midland, Mary Layman and husband Darrell of Keedysville, Kathy Black and husband Rick, Midland, Joe and wife Jan, Woodbridge, VA,  Paul, Midland, Teresa, Cumberland, Cecilia Hite and husband Bobby, Cresaptown,  Jim, Midland, Tim and wife Marcia also of Midland, Sue Pyles and husband Greg, Ridgeley, WV, Gail Weidman and husband David, Harrisburg, PA and Rose Cullen and husband Jamie of Midland.

Dorothy’s 26 grandchildren include: Todd (Carrie), Steve, David (Ariana), Amy (Abdul), Monica, Liz (Jason), Keith, Brandon (Amanda), Tessa (Billy), Brian, Adam, TJ, (Kristen), Shea, Laura (Corey), Kenny, Brittany (Justin), Jordan, Stephanie, Jennifer, Michelle, David, Justine, Joel, Madeline, Anna and Jackson.

The twenty great grandchildren are: Morgan and Grace , Raymond, Nolan and Skye, Raine, Evan and Elise, Zoe, Connor, Lincoln and Layla, Megan, Owen and Brice, Zach and Hunter and Shawn, Luke and Reid.

Dorothy is survived by one brother, Gene and wife Phyllis of Palmyra PA. She was an avid gardener and spent numerous hours canning with family in her basement kitchen the vast amount of harvested fruits and vegetables. She loved playing bingo and during a period of time was known to go 7 days a week. Dorothy was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the parish Sodality.  She was also a member of the Lonaconing Senior Citizen Center. Dorothy was very active and loved being out and about until her surgery in November 2015 that abruptly ended her social activities.  She will be missed by many!

Friends will be received at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home, P.A. in Midland on Thursday, March 10, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 9:30AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Midland with Father Ed Hendricks, celebrant. Interment will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Midland.
