d. May 17, 2014

Doreen "Dorie" Miller, 92, of Lonaconing passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014.

She was born in London, England to the late Henrietta Howe and William Brennan and raised in Canning Town. During World War II, after her family home was demolished in a blitz of the east end of London, she was evacuated to Oxfordshire. Here she worked as a riveter for Mars motors preparing parts for war time aircrafts. Many summers were fondly spent hop-picking with her family in Kent. In 1944, she met and married Lee Miller, an American GI from Lonaconing. In 1946, she arrived in America via Ellis Island on the USS Alexandria and relocated to what would be her life-long home.

Doreen was an active member of the TransAtlantic Bride and Parents Association (TBPA) forming many relationships with other war brides throughout Allegany county. In 1963, she won a trip through this organization which allowed her to return home to England for the first time since relocating to America. Doreen and Lee were active in a local bowling league and participated in both the county and state Senior Olympics during which she was awarded multiple ribbons including a silver medal in basketball. Over the years she developed a fondness for arts and crafts, often taking part in ceramics classes, painting, knitting and needlepoint. For a short period of time Doreen worked at the Lonaconing Senior Center. She subsequently worked at the Westernport Senior Center, retiring in 2011 at the age of 90. She was a beloved member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and the Women of St. Peter's until present day.

Doreen is survived by two children; Leah of Laurel, MD; and Mike and spouse Ann of Frostburg, MD. She is also survived by two grandchildren; David of London, England; and Paul and spouse Kara, of Seven Valleys, PA. Four great-grandchildren; Connor, Evan, Callum and Emily as well as multiple nieces and nephews in America, England and Australia.
